Introducing Apex — Veltryx's Next-Generation Server
Co-posted to Veltryx, Veltryx-Acto and HomeworkSMP.
British Columbia, July 1st, 2026 — For the past several years, Veltryx and its sister organizations have operated on aging, under-powered server infrastructure. This has presented ongoing challenges in maintaining our promised 99% uptime while keeping up with regular maintenance demands.
Technical difficulties have been a recurring theme, particularly in recent months as our hardware continues to age. Today, Veltryx serves its communities through two servers — Awaken and Flow — which are 13 and 5 years old, respectively. Together, they handle 90% of all Veltryx traffic, with Awaken shouldering approximately 60% of requests and Flow handling the remainder. While this dual-server setup helps distribute load, it also introduces complications around cross-server communication that have impacted reliability.
That changes now.
Introducing Apex
After securing the funding needed for a long-overdue hardware upgrade, Veltryx is proud to announce its next-generation server: Apex.
Apex is expected to fully enter service by July 25th, 2026, at which point all Veltryx-hosted services will be migrated to the new hardware. For most users — particularly those relying on Awaken — this will mean a dramatic improvement in performance, with Apex delivering an estimated 750% performance increase over our current primary server.
This upgrade will allow Veltryx to better serve our communities with improved reliability, stronger performance, and significantly higher capacity. Based on current estimations, our uptime will increase from 99% to 99.9% — reducing potential annual downtime from roughly 4 days to under 1 hour. For communities like HomeworkSMP, this means fewer interruptions and less unscheduled maintenance.
For those who previously used Veltryx AD, a new replacement service will be rolling out alongside this migration. More information regarding this transition will follow.
The Future of Awaken and Flow
As Apex enters service, Awaken will remain available as a fallback. While Apex will handle the vast majority of Veltryx traffic going forward, any periods of inevitable downtime will see Awaken stepping in to maintain continuity.
Flow will be retired once Apex is fully in service. As the newer of the two legacy servers, Flow has served its purpose in helping distribute load — but with Apex’s capacity, a secondary active server is no longer necessary. Awaken’s retention as a fallback is a reflection of our commitment to reliability, not a continuation of the old setup.
Migration to Apex
Between July 15th and July 25th, 2026, you may experience increased downtime for the service you use. Where possible, these windows will be scheduled in advance, but that cannot always be guaranteed. Our goal is to stagger the migration of services across the full window rather than transferring everything on the final day, minimizing disruption where we can. That said, in a worst-case scenario, you may experience up to 24 hours of downtime for a given service.
In most cases, no action is required on your end. Please refer to the table below to understand what, if anything, is expected of you.
| Service | Actions |
|---|---|
| HomeworkSMP | No action required |
| Kumon | No action required |
| Squid | No action required |
| Veltryx-hosted FOSS | No action required |
| Veltryx Media | No action required |
| Veltryx SSO | No action required |

We are thrilled to continue serving our communities. Once migration schedules are finalized, they will be announced in their respective communities.

Veltryx thanks its communities for their patience over the years. Apex marks the start of a new chapter — and we’re just getting started.
